Process mining means transparency. It’s about becoming aware of how work is really done and, from there, optimizing, redesigning the process, automating, preventing, and avoiding inefficiencies.
Getting used to this—especially when none of our system structures or work methods were designed with the idea that our sequences of actions would leave an analyzable trace—is no small thing.
In fact, the market’s technological level is very high. But this contrasts with the low levels of awareness and user training when it comes to understanding how a process actually works—let alone in using process mining tools that help interpret and analyze it.
Then, we must add the challenge not so much of accessing data, but of building the best data model for mining. The barriers are often more “political” than technical: silos managed by inaccessible people, or with slow, bureaucratic approval chains. Data may reside with a provider outside your direct control and need to be transferred. Or you may have to set up a new data capture system for things that are happening—but just aren’t being recorded.
Thanks to our collaboration with Denodo and TimeXtender, Inverbis has robust capabilities for accessing, importing, and transforming all kinds of data sources. There’s no corporate data source that can’t be brought into the process mining world.
And yet, every day we hear tough stories from the market about the costs and effort many companies face when trying to use process mining.
We believe this is often due to misguided approaches: process mining should be easy to learn and adopt, with costs that match the project’s scale. That way, the learning curve and the understanding of data—and its enormous potential—can truly take off.
Don’t use a cannon to kill a fly.
The versatility, scope, and richness of processes in organizations deserve the ability to work at all scales—simply. Or, if you prefer: accessibly.
Ease of use is something we’re frequently praised for. From the very beginning, that was our intention. And we’ve shaped our offering to match the scale of each project and each user’s level of knowledge.
Gaining transparency and understanding how things are truly working should be within reach of any professional, without having to be a hero chasing the North Star—or an expert in anything other than their own process.
