In Sickness and in Health, or in Optimization and Automation

The world of healthcare and healthcare organizations shows a surprising trait. Or perhaps not so surprising, if you think about how it operates. The sector is the most open to process mining when you start a conversation with medical directors and hospital managers.

We have a theory as to why. First, clinical treatments are highly protocolized by nature, and the operations follow these protocols closely. In other words, the hospital’s operations are centered around processes, ingrained in the mindset of those who work there, and are often well-documented.

Secondly, there is a greater understanding of the application of statistics. In other words, variance analysis is not an unfamiliar concept. Being statistically significant with the results of a drug or treatment is a requirement in research presentations, funding requests, and so on.

There is also a higher tendency to compare the same procedure across healthcare centers, which is one of the most interesting use cases in process mining.

For this reason, we have focused much of Inverbis’ recent efforts on the healthcare sector (you can take a quick look here), and we are currently working on some truly exciting projects with leading clients.

Want to learn more? Here’s an example of a clinical use case in just thirty seconds. This brings us to another feature that increases value in the hospital world: while typical businesses are very focused on solving problems in the here and now, the relevance of understanding the history of cases is somewhat limited. It’s not that it doesn’t matter, but understanding why something happened is less urgent than solving it immediately. In the hospital world, in addition to mining for pure management processes, clinical pathways are also mined. This helps to identify what benefits patients the most, or improve treatment efficiency.

But since analysis without action doesn’t create value, we have expanded our range of services. For the past few weeks, we’ve been working with a promising automation company, Procesio.com. Now, we can not only identify the inefficient activities, but we can also help automate it when possible. More details coming soon. If you want to learn more, feel free to contact us.
