AI and Process Mining Transform Patient Journeys and Hospital Risk Management

We recently attended a healthcare event with a fresh and interesting format. The idea was to have a number of healthcare organizations each present a challenge they were facing that could be addressed using digital solutions. The audience was then assigned to different tables/teams which using a specific methodology, would try to come up with a solution for the challenge. Throughout the event, the attendees would rotate to different tables to provide a more varied perspective to the discussions and to encourage networking.

Now the goal here was not so much the solution to the challenge in itself, but rather the conversations and the different takes and approaches contributed by people from different backgrounds and roles within the healthcare sector. For us, it was a valuable experience that allowed us a glimpse into the real world problems that matter to healthcare organizations.

The Go-To Solution: Is AI Always the Answer?

Interestingly, there was a common theme that surfaced across most of the challenges. The proponents were allowed to hint at the kind of solution they envisioned and guess what: Almost all of them were looking for something AI. This should not surprise anyone, since we are undergoing a period where AI is everywhere and apparently has become a sort of magic potion that can cure any ailment, or solve any issue.

Nobody is questioning the benefits of AI and how it is poised to disrupt our world as we know it, but we fear there is a tendency to apply it to everything and anything, whether it makes sense or not. It signals a widespread case of FOMO where everyone wants to be part of the AI revolution and at any cost. In this specific instance, there were many challenges that could be solved without using AI, or where AI could provide only part of the solution, or where it plainly didn’t really fit. On the other hand, other technologies (like process mining for example) were treated as the poor cousins or directly ignored.

On the positive side, we had some enriching conversations during the event on how the solutions to some of the challenges could be found by combining AIs ability to execute intelligent actions with the unique process and sequence perspective provided by process mining.

Overlooked Tools: The Case for Process Mining

We have always been strong proponents of combining different technologies, seeing process mining as a set of capabilities forming part of a wider solution, and this is no exception. Some of the things that we explored in the event included:

  • Using process mining data, which contains a wealth of information about paths and sequences, to train AI models to provide better insights in cases that rely heavily on these paths (i.e.: patient journeys, etc.).
  • Using process mining to support the governance of intelligent agents, monitoring performance in relation to the expected or approved procedures that should be followed.

In our view combining both technologies is a field with a promising future, and that we will be exploring further in the coming months. If you also think that AI is currently  everything, everywhere, and all at once, and would like to explore fresh perspectives, why not talk to us. We would be delighted to share the journey…
